LinkedIn as an ATS
When a recruiter in India searches for candidates on LinkedIn, the platform uses its own ranking algorithm — similar to ATS software — to determine which profiles surface first.
This algorithm considers keyword match, profile completeness, connection proximity, activity, and engagement signals. Understanding it is the key to getting found without applying to a single job.
The LinkedIn Search Algorithm for Indian Recruiters
Indian recruiters typically search using:
- Job title (e.g. "Product Manager Bangalore")
- Skills (e.g. "React.js Mumbai 3 years")
- Company name (e.g. "ex-Google India")
- Certifications (e.g. "AWS certified Delhi")
- Industry + function combinations
Your profile rank in these searches depends on:
1. Keyword relevance — do your headline, summary, and experience contain the searched terms?
2. Profile completeness — LinkedIn's algorithm penalises incomplete profiles
3. Connection degree — 1st and 2nd connections rank higher than 3rd+
4. Activity — recently active profiles rank higher
5. Endorsements — skills with 10+ endorsements carry more weight
Optimising Each LinkedIn Section
Headline (220 characters)
Your headline is the single most important ATS field on LinkedIn. It is indexed heavily and appears in every search result.
Formula: [Job Title] | [Top Skill] | [Top Skill] | [Notable Achievement or Company] Example: Senior Product Manager | FinTech | B2C Growth | Ex-Razorpay | 0→1 ProductsNever waste your headline on just your current job title. That is the default and it wastes 200 characters of keyword real estate.
About section (2,000 characters)
Write your About section in first person. Include:
- Your target role and domain
- Your top 3–5 skills (exact terms recruiters search for)
- Your most significant measurable achievement
- What you are looking for next
- Contact information (email)
End with a list of skills as plain text — this is indexed by LinkedIn's algorithm.
Experience section
Treat this exactly like your resume — strong action verbs, metrics, JD keywords. But also:
- Add media (presentations, articles, project links) to each role
- Tag your employer — this links your profile to the company page
- Include skills under each role using the LinkedIn "Skills" feature per experience
Skills section
Add all 50 skills LinkedIn allows. Prioritise:
- Skills that appear in your target JDs
- Skills where you can get endorsements from colleagues
- Both technical and soft skills
Request endorsements from colleagues for your top 5 skills — profiles with 10+ endorsements per skill rank significantly higher.
Education section
Complete every field. Add activities, societies, and courses. This improves profile completeness score.
Featured section
Add your best work: articles you have written, projects, presentations, or your ATSPass-optimised resume.
Profile Completeness
LinkedIn's own search and recommendation features are built to favor complete, "All-Star" profiles over incomplete ones.
To reach All-Star status you need:
- Profile photo
- Background photo
- Headline
- Location and industry
- Current position with description
- Education
- 5+ skills
- 50+ connections
Keywords Strategy for Indian Job Market
Research phase: Open the last 10 JDs you are targeting. Copy all skills, tools, and phrases that appear 3+ times. These are your primary keywords. Placement: Include each primary keyword at least twice — once in your headline/summary and once in your experience section. Variations: Include both abbreviated and full forms. "ML" and "machine learning," "PM" and "product management," "UI/UX" and "user interface design."Activity Signals
LinkedIn's algorithm rewards active profiles. Post or comment once per week to maintain high activity score. Even liking and commenting on posts in your industry improves your ranking in recruiter searches.
Check Your Resume Too
Before applying via LinkedIn Easy Apply, always check your resume against the specific JD using ATSPass. LinkedIn Easy Apply sends your uploaded resume through company ATS systems — a high LinkedIn profile rank gets you seen, but your resume ATS score determines if you get called.
