Do Indian recruiters actually read cover letters?

For most Indian startups and IT service companies applying through Naukri, cover letters are optional and often not read. However, for MNCs, consulting firms, and senior roles (Deloitte, McKinsey, Goldman Sachs India, P&G, Unilever), a tailored cover letter is a significant screening signal.

The 4-paragraph structure that works

Paragraph 1 — The hook (2–3 sentences)

State the exact role you are applying for and your single most relevant credential. Don't start with "I am writing to express my interest in..." — every recruiter has seen that sentence 10,000 times.

Paragraph 2 — Your most relevant achievement (3–4 sentences)

Pick one specific, quantified achievement that directly maps to what the JD is asking for.

Paragraph 3 — Why this company (2–3 sentences)

Reference a specific product, initiative, or business challenge. Generic "I admire your company culture" sentences are ignored.

Paragraph 4 — The close (1–2 sentences)

State your availability and express clear interest. Be confident and specific.

Common mistakes Indian job seekers make

• Starting with "I" — restructure the opening to start with the company, role, or a credential.
• Summarising the resume — the cover letter should add new context, not repeat what is already on the resume.
• Generic company praise — "I have always admired your company" tells the recruiter nothing.
• No metrics — achievements without numbers are weak. Always quantify: %, ₹, users, time saved.
• Too long — anything over 400 words in an Indian context will not be read in full.
