The IT Fresher Reality in India
Every year, approximately 15 lakh engineering graduates enter India's IT job market. They compete for roles at TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Cognizant, and thousands of startups.
The hard truth: most fresher resumes are filtered out by ATS before any recruiter reads them — not because the candidates lack skills, but because their resumes are not formatted or keyword-optimised for ATS systems.
This guide fixes that.
What IT Companies Look For in Fresher Resumes
Mass hiring companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL)
These companies use automated ATS screening at massive scale. They look for:
- Qualifying CGPA (usually 60% or 6.0 CGPA minimum)
- Core programming skills (Java, Python, C++)
- Communication skills indicators
- Consistent academic record
- Relevant certifications
Product companies and startups
These companies look for proof of ability:
- GitHub projects with real code
- Problem-solving track record (LeetCode, HackerRank ratings)
- Specific technology stack match
- Internship experience
- Open source contributions
Section-by-Section Guide
1. Contact Information
Name, email, phone, city, LinkedIn, GitHub URL. That is all. No photo, no date of birth.
Your GitHub and LinkedIn URLs are critical for IT roles — include them always.
2. Professional Summary (Critical for ATS)
3 sentences. Include:
- Your degree and specialisation
- Your target role
- Your strongest technical skills and one proof point
3. Skills (Most Important ATS Section)
Organise by category:
Programming Languages: Java, Python, JavaScript, C++, SQL Frameworks: Spring Boot, React.js, Node.js, Django Tools: Git, GitHub, VS Code, Postman, IntelliJ IDEA Cloud/DevOps: AWS (basics), Docker (basics), Linux Databases: MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL Soft Skills: Problem solving, Team collaboration, Agile methodology4. Education
Degree | College | Year | CGPA/Percentage
If CGPA is below 7.0, consider listing percentage instead if it is above 65%.
List relevant coursework: Data Structures and Algorithms, Database Management Systems, Operating Systems, Computer Networks, Object-Oriented Programming.
5. Projects (Your Work Experience Equivalent)
This is the most important section for freshers. Each project needs:
- Project name and brief description (one line)
- Tech stack used (all tools and languages)
- What you built (feature count, user capacity, scale)
- Outcome (performance improvement, accuracy, load time, users)
6. Internships
If you have internship experience, place this above Projects. Format identically to Work Experience on a senior resume — company, role, duration, bullet points with metrics.
7. Certifications
List every relevant certification:
- AWS Cloud Practitioner
- Google Data Analytics (Coursera)
- Meta Front-End Developer
- HackerRank Python/SQL certificates
- NPTEL courses (mark score if above 75%)
ATS Keywords by Role
Software Developer / SDE:Java, Python, data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, REST API, Git, SQL, system design, unit testing, Agile, Spring Boot, microservices
Web Developer:HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, React.js, Node.js, responsive design, REST API, MongoDB, Git, GitHub, deployment, performance optimisation
Data Analyst:Python, SQL, Excel, Power BI, Tableau, data visualisation, pandas, NumPy, statistical analysis, data cleaning, reporting, business intelligence
Android Developer:Kotlin, Java, Android SDK, Android Studio, REST API integration, Firebase, Material Design, Play Store deployment, Git
GitHub and LeetCode
For IT freshers in India, a strong GitHub profile can outweigh a mediocre CGPA at startups and product companies.
Minimum GitHub standard:- 3+ repositories with complete README files
- Regular commit history (green squares matter)
- At least one project that is deployed and accessible
- 150+ problems solved
- At least 30 medium problems
- 1500+ contest rating for top product companies
Include your LeetCode profile URL on your resume if your rating is above 1400.
Check Your ATS Score Before Applying
Run your resume against every JD before applying using ATSPass. For IT fresher roles, the most common gaps are:
- Missing specific framework versions (React vs React.js)
- Projects not described with enough technical detail
- Skills listed in prose instead of a structured section
- No GitHub link or inactive GitHub profile
