Do Indian Recruiters Read Cover Letters?
The honest answer: it depends on the company.
For most IT service companies and mass hiring (TCS, Infosys, Wipro applying through Naukri), cover letters are rarely read. The ATS score and recruiter keyword search determine who gets called.
However, for MNCs, consulting firms, and product companies (Deloitte, McKinsey, Goldman Sachs India, Swiggy, Razorpay, CRED, PhonePe), a tailored cover letter is a meaningful differentiator — especially for senior roles or when applying via email or referral.
The rule: when in doubt, include one. A good cover letter takes 10 minutes with ATSPass. A missing one can cost you an interview.
The 4-Paragraph Cover Letter Structure That Works
Paragraph 1 — The Hook (2–3 sentences)
State exactly what role you are applying for and your single most relevant credential. Never start with "I am writing to express my interest in..."
Strong example: "I am applying for the Senior Product Manager role at Swiggy posted on LinkedIn. Having owned the full product roadmap for a food-delivery feature used by 500,000+ daily users, I am drawn to Swiggy's mission of delivering delightful consumer experiences at scale."Paragraph 2 — Your Best Achievement (3–4 sentences)
Pick one specific, quantified achievement that directly addresses what the JD is asking for. This should be your single strongest proof that you can do the job.
Strong example: "In my current role at Meesho, I led the redesign of the seller onboarding flow that reduced time-to-first-sale from 14 days to 4 days — improving seller activation by 38% and contributing ₹12Cr in incremental GMV in Q3 FY2024. I coordinated with engineering, design, and marketing teams across two time zones to ship on schedule."Paragraph 3 — Why This Company (2–3 sentences)
Reference something specific about the company — a product, initiative, or challenge. Generic statements like "I have always admired your company" tell the recruiter nothing.
Strong example: "What draws me specifically to Swiggy is Instamart — building a profitable 10-minute grocery delivery model at India's scale is one of the most complex product-operations problems in the country, and exactly the kind of challenge I want to work on next."Paragraph 4 — The Close (1–2 sentences)
Be direct and confident. State your availability.
Strong example: "I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my experience can contribute to Swiggy's growth. I am available for a call any time this week."Cover Letter Formatting Rules for India

Common Cover Letter Mistakes Indian Job Seekers Make
Starting with "I" — Restructure to start with the company, role, or credential. Summarising the resume — The cover letter adds new context. Never repeat what is already on your resume. Generic company praise — "I have always admired your culture" is ignored. Be specific. No metrics — Every achievement needs a number: %, ₹, users, time saved, team size. Too long — Anything over 400 words will not be read in full by an Indian recruiter. Not tailoring — Sending the same cover letter to every company is immediately obvious.Fresher Cover Letter Tips
If you have no work experience, replace Paragraph 2 with your most relevant academic project, internship achievement, or college leadership role. Quantify it: team size, scope, outcome, technology used.
