Why Most Indian Resume Formats Fail ATS
The majority of Indian job seekers use one of three resume formats that guarantee ATS failure:
Canva templates — Canva exports text as images in most templates. ATS parsers cannot extract text from images. Your entire resume becomes invisible to the system. Two-column layouts — ATS parsers read left-to-right, top-to-bottom. Content in a second column gets merged with the first column, creating nonsensical output that cannot be matched to keywords. Tables and text boxes — Microsoft Word tables and text boxes are skipped entirely by most ATS parsers. Any content inside them is lost.The ATS-Safe Resume Format
File format
Always submit a text-based PDF or .DOCX file.
- Text-based PDF: created by saving a Word document or Google Doc as PDF
- DOCX: the safest choice for most ATS systems
- Never submit: image PDF, Canva export, JPG, PNG, scanned document
To check if your PDF is text-based: open it and try to highlight/select text. If you can select text, it is ATS-safe. If you cannot, it is image-based — reject it.
Layout
- Single column only — no exceptions
- No tables, no text boxes, no columns
- No headers or footers (ATS parsers skip them)
- No images, photos, logos, or icons
- No coloured backgrounds or shading
Fonts
Stick to universally recognised fonts:
- Arial (recommended)
- Calibri
- Times New Roman
- Garamond
- Georgia
Font size: 10–12pt for body text, 14–16pt for your name.

Use exactly these standard headings — ATS systems are trained to recognise them:
- Work Experience (not "Career History" or "Professional Journey")
- Education (not "Academic Background")
- Skills (not "Expertise" or "Competencies")
- Certifications (not "Credentials")
- Projects (not "Portfolio")
Contact information
Place all contact details in the main body, never in a document header or footer.
Include: Full name, email, phone, city/state, LinkedIn URL.
Do not include: photo, date of birth, marital status, gender, Aadhaar number. These are not required for job applications in India and waste space.
Bullet points
- Every experience bullet starts with a strong past-tense action verb
- Every bullet includes at least one metric (%, ₹, number of users, team size, time saved)
- Maximum 5 bullets per role
- Each bullet is one sentence, ideally under 20 words
